honoring the parents

¹⁶Honor your father and mother, just as the Lord your God has instructed you, so that you may live a long time, and so that it may be well with you in the land, which the Lord your God will give to you.

¹Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is just. ²Honor your father and your mother. This is the first commandment with a promise: ³so that it may be well with you, and so that you may have a long life upon the earth. ⁴And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but educate them with the discipline and correction of the Lord. ⁵Servants, be obedient to your lords according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in the simplicity of your heart, as to Christ. ⁶Do not serve only when seen, as if to please men, but act as servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.

I am the Lord your God: strong, zealous, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the sons to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, ⁶and showing mercy to thousands of those who love me and keep my precepts.

³Let each one fear his father and his mother. Observe my Sabbaths. I am the Lord your God.

¹A Prayer of David himself. Incline your ear, O Lord, and hear me. For I am needy and poor. ²Preserve my soul, for I am holy. My God, bring salvation to your servant who hopes in you. ³O Lord, be merciful to me, for I have cried out to you all day long. ⁴Give joy to the soul of your servant, for I have lifted up my soul to you, Lord. ⁵For you are sweet and mild, Lord, and plentiful in mercy to all who call upon you. ⁶Pay attention, Lord, to my prayer, and attend to the voice of my supplication.

¹“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. ²Every branch in me that does not bear fruit, he will take away. And each one that does bear fruit, he will cleanse, so that it may bring forth more fruit. ³You are clean now, because of the word that I have spoken to you. ⁴Abide in me, and I in you. Just as the branch is not able to bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, so also are you unable, unless you abide in me. ⁵I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me, and I in him, bears much fruit. For without me, you are able to do nothing. ⁶If anyone does not abide in me, he will be cast away, like a branch, and he will wither, and they will gather him and cast him into the fire, and he burns.

²⁰Children, obey your parents in all things. For this is well-pleasing to the Lord.

¹⁶She answered, “Do not be against me, as if I would abandon you and go away; for wherever you will go, I will go, and where you will stay, I also will stay with you. Your people are my people, and your God is my God. ¹⁷Whichever land will receive you dying, in the same I will die, and there I will have the place of my burial. May God cause these things to happen to me, and add more also, if anything except death alone should separate you and I.”
