Life: Is this it?
Summary
The first session of the Alpha Youth Series is an invitation to slow down and ask the big questions: What is life all about? Is there a God? Why am I here? Hosts Ben Woodman and Jason Ballard suggest that we can have everything we think we want and still sense that something is missing — a longing for something truer and deeper. They explore that longing through three claims Jesus made about himself: that he is the way, the truth, and the life.
Key Points
I am the way
- "You can have everything in the world and still be the loneliest man." — Freddie Mercury, former lead singer of Queen.
- Jesus claims to be the way to a loving and lasting relationship with God.
I am the truth
- "When we're talking about facts, if something is true, isn't it true for everyone? And if something is not true, isn't it not true for anyone?" — Jason
- "Christianity is a statement which, if false, is of no importance, and if true, of infinite importance. The one thing it cannot be is moderately important." — C.S. Lewis
- In Jesus, truth isn't just a set of ideas but a person you can know.
I am the life
- It's possible to be alive but not truly living.
- "So many things creep into our lives and take away from the life God designed for us: fear, insecurity, addictions, guilt, hopelessness." — Jason
- "I realized the hunger in my heart was still there. I had everything I thought I needed, but there was still something missing… a longing for life." — Ben
Notable Quotes
"Jesus answered, 'I am the way and the truth and the life.'" — John 14:6
"You have approximately 570,000 hours left to live and we want to invite you to spend less than 24 of them with us on Alpha." — Jason
Alpha opens by making space for life's biggest questions — what is life all about, is there a God, and why am I here? — and begins to explore them by looking at the life and words of Jesus.
